Choosing a top rated men’s cologne can be a tough task. From aquatics, to orientals, to aromatics, there’s just so many out there, it’s easy to get confused about which to pick. I’m here to give you some direction. In today’s list, I’ve identified several of my favourite scents this year that receive near-universal praise. Let’s get started.
1. Tom Ford Ombre Leather
The iconic Tom Ford fragrance, Ombre Leather, is the first entry on this list of top rated men’s cologne.
For many, myself included, this was the cologne that ignited a desire to further explore the house of Tom Ford. Yeah…it leaves that sort of impression.
What’s remarkable to me is the authentically supple leather texture that this scent disperses. Also featuring smooth white floral jasmine and cardamom, Ombre Leather daringly approaches the line yet never crosses it.
A bottle design that reflects that character of the juice within, many agree that Uncle Tom has created something truly special here.
Ombre Leather opened my eyes to the beauty of leather fragrances. This is such a sophisticated and sexy men’s fragrance. The cardamom, jasmine, leather and patchouli exist in perfect harmony. Really excellent.Fragrantica.com
2. Xerjoff Naxos
The next entry is a renowned cologne from Xerjoff, Naxos.
The scent that brought Xerjoff deserved recognition, Naxos is celebrated for its memorable pairing of honey and tobacco. Though don’t let these notes fool you – this duo is skilfully blended with aromatics and citrus to create an aroma that smells warm, inviting and balanced.
Therefore, you won’t be surprised to learn that Naxos’ wearability transcends seasons, despite those two dense primary notes. And with the strongest performance in the business, I’m thankful for the rave ratings that encouraged me to buy a bottle.
Each note takes turns to shine and take over the composition on different days. Sometimes I smell like cherries and amaretto, sometimes I’m in lavender heaven, sometimes it’s all about an aromatic tobacco mixed with honey. Despite these powerful notes, Naxos feels airy and easy to wear, even office friendly. Longevity is truly remarkable- ~7 hours on skin, days on clothes.Fragrantica.com
3. YSL La Nuit de L’Homme Bleu Electrique
YSL’s latest stunner, La Nuit de L’Homme Bleu Electrique, has also earned a place on this list.
Bleu Electrique is a flanker to the original La Nuit de L’Homme, a dignified cologne featuring aromatics, lavender, and woods. However, Bleu Electrique feels brighter and more charismatic than the OG, thanks to a lively augementation of ginger and bergamot.
Bleu Electrique is also impressively flexible, wearable year-round thanks to its agreeable composition. Despite overwhelming positive reviews, discontinuation rumours are rife – so don’t sit on your hands if you want to try this one out, fellas.
A fresher brighter version of the original that will definitely get you positive attention from the opposite sex…or same sex…No judgments! Lol. This really is an absolute compliment magnet. Best suited for cooler weather and a killer night out fragrance. Performance is on par with the OG and perhaps a bit more versatile due to its fresher take. Highly recommend.Fragrantica.com
4. Spicebomb Extreme
The sweet and spicy tobacco juggernaut Spicebomb Extreme hits this list in the number 4 position.
Featuring vanilla, spices, lavender and a masculine tobacco backbone, Spicebomb Extreme brings together all the facets us blokes love. However, it’s the balance of notes that really impresses me about this one. Never too spicy, never too sweet – always just right.
Furthermore, Spicebomb Extreme is blended in a way that appeals to the masses yet brings something new to the table, a rare task in the fragrance industry these days.
Once you also consider the robust performance and affordable price tag, it soon becomes crystal clear why this is one of the top rated men’s scents available today.
No need for a long review. This is my favorite sweet/spicy/tobacco fragrance in this price range, and even above. It strikes a great balance between those three elements. I prefer it to TF Tobacco Vanille, which I find too sweet for my tastes. For me this is a perpetual rebuy and a must try if you enjoy this style of fragrance.Fragrantica.com
5. Parfums de Marly Layton
Next up we’re taking a look at the most popular offering from niche brand Parfums de Marly – Layton.
Often considered a staple starter niche scent, Layton deftly brings together a variety of notes to form a composition that smells warm, sweet, aromatic, and woody. In detail, the opening of lavender and apple smells bright and engaging, before drying down into a seductive base of vanilla, cardamom, and woods.
Layton smells signature scent worthy, and is what I like to call an easy reach scent.
Since it reviews well among critics and fragrance lovers alike, I knew I had to review it for myself. I hope you enjoy this Parfums de Marly creation as much as I do.
My signature scent. Elitists will point out it is a niche fragrance with designer notes… as if this is a bad thing… to me it is the best of both worlds. Layton possesses the “style” of a designer fragrance with the ingredient “substance” of a niche fragrance. Compliments abound, appeals to most ladies; Layton is a fruity/vanilla symphony with a balance provided by lavender, cardamom and sandalwood. This fragrance is… FUN!Fragrantica.com
6. Acqua di Gio Profumo
Giorgio Armani’s Acqua di Gio Profumo also snags a position on this list of top rated men’s cologne.
Profumo was released in 2015 and is a successor to the original uber beloved Acqua di Gio. However, many argue that Profumo surpasses its popular precedessor.
That’s because Profumo contains everything we love in a summer aquatic scent, including marine notes, fresh bergamot, and aromatic touches. Yet, it’s the masterful addition of an appealing incense note that gives this one a unique, mysterious edge.
As versatile as it is one-of-a-kind, reviewers routinely rate this fragrance highly and I can understand why.
Top 5 fragrance, beautiful marine fragrance with just the right amount of smoke and spice. Lasts ages and always seems to be a decent price for a 125ml. I probably will get another bottle before the end of the year just in case they discontinue this. I think everyone should have a bottle of this, anyone and everyone could wear. Definitely a staple in my collection.Fragrantica.com
7. Creed Aventus
The mighty Creed Aventus. A cologne that has ascended to cult status, takes out the last spot in this list of top rated men’s cologne.
A composition that continues to receive praise the world over, there’s a reason Aventus has been replicated to death by other brands. Its adaptable citrus-woody profile is wearable in almost any scenario, and you’ll struggle to find anyone who actively dislikes this aroma.
Juicy citrus notes of pineapple and bergamot combine with woods and musk to produce a formation that is refreshing and confident.
Despite the average performance and hefty price tag, there’s no denying the enduring likeability of the Aventus scent profile.
This will get you compliments. From EVERYBODY. Random strangers will compliment you. Animals will compliment you. Insects will chirp as you pass by. You will turn heads. Your compliments will get compliments.Fragrantica.com
