Acqua di Gio Profumo is SPECIAL: Here’s Why [Reviewed]

Acqua di Gio Profumo is a men’s cologne from the designer house of Giorgio Armani. Released in 2015, Profumo has become exceedingly popular since, due to its unique fragrance attributes. After wearing it for years, I think it’s time I shared my views on what makes this fragrance so special.

What does Acqua di Gio Profumo smell like?

Acqua di Gio profumo contains notes of bergamot, sea notes, rosemary, sage, incense, and patchouli.

Two words that come to mind that symbolize the opening are refreshing and mysterious.

On first spray, the sea and bergamot notes have the refreshing aspect well and truly covered. The aquatic, oceanic aroma is easily noticed – accompanied by the citrusy, tart-like character of bergamot.

Aquatic, marine vibes

Secondly, the mysterious aspect is the incense accord. Making itself known early, it’s present until Profumo’s dry down. The incense smells smoky, yet clean. It adds an enigmatic element to the marine opening, one which isn’t present in its sibling Acqua di Gio Profondo.

Afterward, as Profumo develops further, a few changes happen:

  • Subtleties of rosemary and sage emerge. The rosemary provides a herbaceous, pine-like addition, whilst the sage delivers a crisp, green aspect; and
  • A patchouli undertone peers through from the base, smelling earthy yet pure and palatable.
Herbaceous rosemary

Once fully dried on skin, most of the accords have started receding. As the notes peel back one by one, what remains are remnants of the uncommon incense note coupled with earthy patchouli. A far cry from the opening of Profumo, which begins as exceedingly marine and aromatic.

In summary, Acqua di Gio Profumo is an aquatic fragrance unlike most others. Sure, it contains familiar sea, bergamot, and herbal notes. However, it’s the incense and patchouli which really make this stand out from the crowd. Who knew that these two hefty notes could be weaved so cleverly into a summer scent?

Check what this reviewer had to say:

Lots of citrus and incense mixing in with patchouli and geranium. Sea notes add the marine vibe and the sage gives the scent that extra sensuality. Walking along the beach at night in the Bahamas under a full moon is the vibe I get. One extra surprise I got was the complexity, it really opens up in the basenotes and the rosemary comes out more. And it’s really beautiful accord to add to the mysterious smoky enigmatic night time in paradise vibe.

What’s the performance like?

I rate the performance of Aqua di Gio Profumo as moderate.

Profumo projects out from the skin tamely for the first 3 hours. Afterward, it settles closer to the skin for a further 5 hours, lasting for a collective 8 hours.

The performance of Profumo isn’t unlike the rest of the Acqua di Gio line. Mild projection, but impressive longevity.

Is it versatile?

For an aquatic, Profumo is surprisingly versatile.

That’s thanks to the incense and patchouli notes present. They allow this to be worn in weather that isn’t just hot – including autumn and spring months. However, you can even rock this in winter if you have that desire – although I prefer Bvlgari Man In Black for chilly conditions.

The type of man that could wear Profumo

I find Profumo suitable for casual situations and valuable for dates due to the mysterious elements present. Although, there’s enough adaptability here to wear it in the workplace. You won’t be offending anyone, and some may become curious.

In conclusion, Acqua di Gio Profumo is one of my favourite aquatic scents ever. It includes the marine, citrus and herbaceous accords that feature in many respected summer freshies. Although, the smoky incense is the star player here, providing a unique attention-grabbing twist that I’ve fallen in love with.
