BDK Gris Charnel vs Gris Charnel Extrait (Compared)

BDK Gris Charnel is an exceptional unisex fragrance released in 2019. Upon launch, it was lauded for its comforting aroma of woodiness and figs. In fact, it became such a success that BDK created a flanker, Gris Charnel Extrait, in 2022. Recently there’s been a huge rise in popularity of these two scents. Thus, over the last few weeks I decided to test both side-by-side. And today, I’m going to compare the two and help you decide which to buy.

What does Gris Charnel smell like?

BDK Gris Charnel contains cardamom, fig, black tea, iris, vetiver, sandalwood, and tonka bean. A pretty unique mix right there. It’s been a minute since I’ve seen black tea in a perfume!

On first spray it begins with a robust cardamom accord that comes across as warm and slightly spicy.

It’s paired with fig, which projects a gentle and creamy sweetness. There’s also that relaxing undercurrent of black tea that becomes more noticeable over time.

As it develops, the iris and vetiver accords can be smelled. Together they add a slightly powdery and woody touch.

Finally, sandalwood and tonka bean do work in the dry down. They continue the sweet, creamy role of the fig which has since faded.

BDK Gris Charnel smells soothing and elegant. It unites the warmth of cardamom with the distinctive, cozy attributes of fig and black tea. Then, softer nuances arrive over time. It’s also entirely unisex, suitable for both men and women.

What does Gris Charnel Extrait smell like?

BDK Gris Charnel Extrait contains the same accords as its predecessor but introduces 2 new notes – vanilla and cedar.

You won’t be waiting long to notice the difference. It’s apparent right from the opening. Vanilla promotes a rich, delectable form of sweetness and the fig plays a smaller role. Thus, there’s also less creamy texture here.

Additionally, the cedar accord creates an entirely new and deep facet. It features its trademark dryness, smelling curiously similar to pencil shavings. Somehow, the shavings smells oddly addictive and satisfying. Bentley for Men Absolute has a similar woody shavings vibe.

In short, Gris Charnel Extrait smells like a more concentrated, sweeter, and woodier take on the original. It takes the original formula and dials it up to 11 – exactly what you expect from an extrait.

I’m a sucker for intensity. Naturally, the Extrait has therefore become my favourite.

Which one is stronger?

The Extrait is stronger. However, it isn’t miles ahead of the OG at all.

Specifically, the Extrait features total longevity of around 8 hours, projecting out softly from skin for the first 2.

Comparatively, the original Gris Charnel will last about 6-7 hours on you. And similarly, projecting out subtly for 2.

Which one to buy?

Ultimately, your buying decision will boil down to when you plan on wearing it. That’s because both have their individual strengths that make them superior in certain situations.

The Extrait has enhanced richness and masculine feel with that compelling cedar. Thus, it’s a weapon for romantic occasions, special events, and nights out.
