Kilian Black Phantom (review): a SEXY Gourmand Cologne

Kilian Black Phantom is a deliciously dark cologne from the house of By Kilian. It’s a sweet and seductive concoction which has risen to become the most popular fragrance from the brand. Today we’re going to review this scent and see if it might be the best gourmand cologne on the market right now.

The main accords I pick out of this cologne include rum, dark chocolate, caramel, coffee, woods, and almond.

How Does Black Phantom Smell?

When sprayed on skin, Black Phantom reminds me of burnt caramel. I suspect the opening aroma is not only caramel, but also coffee, chocolate and rum accords.

The rum offers a restrained booziness and is not overpowering at all. It works extremely well alongside the sweetness of the chocolate and caramel.

The roasted coffee acts as the perfect equaliser to prevent the abovementioned notes from ever becoming too sweet. Additionally, I think it’s this coffee note that gives the caramel accord the addictive burnt quality.

Once dried on skin, the sweet elements fade slightly, making way for almond and woods. The almond adds a subtle yet enticing nuttiness, whilst the woods provide cozy depth to the scent.

Black Phantom’s scent profile exceeded my expectations. Because of some of the notes, I was expecting more of a bright sweetness. However, this is anything but bright!

It is a mature, dark, mysterious, sweet gourmand and I would suggest it’s the dark choc and rum providing this vibe. Once you get your nose on it, you’ll see what I mean.

Nutty chocolate milk drink – that’s what I imagine when I smell this. It’s delicious! There’s sugar, there’s chocolate, there’s coffee in the beginning (I wish it stayed longer!). I don’t get the rum, which I think would make this more wearable for me.

Longevity and Projection

This cologne just lasts all day! It must have something to do with the scent profile, because it lasts about 12 hours total on my skin. Within that time, Black Phantom projects out moderately from my skin for the first few hours. In my experience I wouldn’t classify this as a beast mode performer, unlike a fragrance such as PDM Layton.

Occasions

Black Phantom works best as a special occasion scent worn in the evening or cooler months. Additionally, Black Phantom is what I’d consider to be the ultimate close encounter scent. This is nothing short of perfect for an intimate date night with your special someone.
