Acqua di Gio Parfum is a men’s cologne released in 2023. It’s another drop in the Acqua di Gio line of scents, widely renowned for their freshness. Furthermore, this new Parfum tells a curious story. The now discontinued Acqua di Gio Profumo was the exclusive inspiration behind it. Thus, it’s generated a huge amount of questions about how similar they are. Here’s the 3 important things you must know.

1.     It’s ALMOST identical to Profumo

Acqua di Gio Parfum is almost identical to Acqua di Gio Profumo. That includes the note breakdown – it has marine notes, bergamot, rosemary, sage, olibanum, and patchouli.

Firstly, you’ll smell marine notes and bergamot in the Parfum. They offer a citrusy fresh and airy aquatic burst to the senses.

Next come rosemary and sage. This duo gives off a brisk and herbaceous edge that accompanies the oceanic opening.

A resinous olibanum note also arrives. This is surprising since it’s officially a base note. Nevertheless, it establishes a smoky texture that mingles amongst the existing accords.

Until this point, the Parfum smells very similar to Profumo. Refreshing marine opening? Check. Subtle herbs and smokiness appearing afterwards? Check.

However, the dry down is where the true separation occurs.

The hazy olibanum accord – that mirrors the incense in Profumo – departs quickly. It hangs around for 10 minutes, then dips.

Once this happens, earthy patchouli in the base appears. It drifts amongst the enduring marine notes and herbs. Additionally, I start to smell strong similarities to Acqua di Gio EDP at this point.

In summary, Acqua di Gio Parfum smells refreshing and oceanic. Then, smoky olibanum and herbal accords become visible. Finally, patchouli emerges, substituting for the smokiness. The Parfum smells cooling and therapeutic, before growing more grounded over time. Although it matches Profumo in many ways, it renounces the raw dense incense of that release.

Despite that, the discrepancies aren’t worth sweating over. They’re small, and average joes won’t notice much variation between the two.

At first sniff, I immediately thought Acqua di Gio Parfum was a dead ringer for Profumo. Given the chance to settle for a moment, this new version shows it’s differences. For one, Parfum has a greener, more herbal element which draws a straight line from last year’s Eau de Parfum. It’s also a lot more airy. This Parfum feels much less dense than the Profumo of old.

2.     Performance is a (small) downgrade

The Parfum performs slightly less than its predecessor. Although given how strong Profumo is, that’s hardly a criticism.

Specifically, it projects moderately off skin for 3 hours before it becomes a skin scent for another 5. Thus, it has 8 hours of total lasting power. 

Ultimately, the dominant incense note in Profumo is what drives the strength difference between them.

3.     It’s slightly more versatile

Here’s where the absence of incense pays off. Lacking the dark odour makes Acqua di Gio Parfum a more versatile option.

It’s suitable for both day and night. I’ve been wearing it during casual catch ups and also at the gym.

Furthermore, it possesses enough dignity to wear to special events like weddings and graduations.

Seasonally, it’ll work any time of year, especially summer. However, I still prefer Acqua di Gio Profondo for the absolute hottest days.

In Conclusion – Acqua di Gio Parfum

Acqua di Gio Parfum is another impressive release from Armani. They just keep churning out terrific tonics don’t they?

This scent isn’t redundant despite drawing heavy influence from Profumo. In fact, it makes the DNA even more appealing to the masses.

The addition of oceanic airiness and softening the incense improves range and dependability over the prior offering.
