Is Dunhill Icon Worth Buying Today? [Review]

Icon is a 2015 cologne release from the designer fashion house Dunhill. I’ve owned my bottle of Dunhill Icon for well over a year now and I’ve become very familiar with the scent. Let’s take a look and see if it’s worth buying this year.

Cologne Notes

Dunhill Icon is an aromatic woody fragrance. The main notes in this cologne include bergamot, neroli, pepper, cardamom, vetiver, lavender, and leather.

How Does Dunhill Icon Smell?

When I first spray it on the skin, the bergamot, neroli, and pepper are the most prominent accords. The bergamot and project project a combination of mature citrusy freshness. Additionally, the pepper contributes smoky spiciness to the composition. At this stage, I also pick up a touch of sweetness as well.

Although not listed in the notes by Dunhill, I also smell some orange to accompany those other citrus accords.

Bergamot

The pepper is an unexpected yet appealing element mixed with the citrus and orange notes. I think it gives the scent daring masculine character.

Once this cologne dries on your skin, it actually changes a little bit. Affordable fragrances under $100 aren’t known to do that and it took me by surprise.

The citrus notes slowly subside and become more mellow. Additionally, subtle leather and lavender notes replace them and give the scent an aromatic vibe to it.

Fortunately, the pepper stays throughout the life of the fragrance which I really appreciate.

Pepper accord

Dunhill Icon comes in both 50ml and 100ml bottles. It’s an Eau de Parfum (EDP) concentration. If you’d like to learn more about cologne concentrations, I wrote about that here.

Longevity and Projection

This cologne has moderate performance when you consider the price. Not overpowering, but not a skin scent either. In my experience, this scent projects out from the skin by 1-2 feet for a few hours and lasts 5-7 hours total.

Occasions and Versatility

Dunhill Icon gets a tick for versatility. This fragrance is wearable for day or night, any season, and either casual or formal situation. However, it’ll work best in formal situations and warm weather.

Icon is definitely a more mature scent. Guys in their mid to late 20’s and above are best suited to this. Moreover, if you consider yourself fashionable and take pride in how you look, this cologne is in your wheelhouse.

The bottle design and weight took me by surprise, and I like it. It’s sturdy with clean edges. I think the bottle design reflects the attitude of the fragrance within.

Check out what this reviewer had to say about this cologne:

This cologne is Iconic (pun intended). Fresh, clean, citrusy, and that distinctive grape-soda smell that many reviewers talk about, is what i get. Longevity is 5-6 hrs on my skin nothing too strong.
