Parfums de Marly Kalan is Controversial (Review)

Parfums de Marly Kalan is a cologne for men released in 2019. Since launch, Kalan has become notorious for its fearless spicy aroma, setting it apart from other Parfums de Marly fragrances. Although it generates controversy, I can’t help but feel hooked by its audacious scent profile. Read on and I’ll explain.

Parfums de Marly Kalan smells like strong spices and green earthy woods

Parfums de Marly Kalan contains pepper, spices, blood orange, lavender, moss, woods, and amber.

A spicy blast is what you’ll notice immediately in the opening. Vigorous pepper is here, mixing amongst assorted other spices too. They smell more hot than warm – think chilies instead of cardamom. Immediately, the spicy dominance will show you why this cologne is so divisive.

Dominant, spicy pepper

Supporting the spices is blood orange. The orange, too, contributes a burst of energy straight out of the gate. Also, it adds some tangy sweetness that mingles behind the spices.

Some people mention comparisons between Kalan and Baccarat Rouge 540 at this stage. They remark about ‘burnt sugar’ similarities. Although there are some parallels, these colognes aren’t even close to identical.

Some changes happen at the scent progresses:

  • A mossy note emerges, presenting a distinct green, earthy-like feel; and
  • Lavender imbues an aromatic, masculine floral touch amongst the moss.

Green, earthy mossy hues

Once the cologne dries down, some shifts happen. The early strong spicy citrus essence pulls back, now only pulsing softly. The earthy moss and lavender endure, whilst woods and amber rise to support them. These two new accords add woody depth and an almost dirty forest bed feel.

In summary, Parfums de Marly Kalan smells like a punchy pepper scent with a splash of sweet zesty citrus. Then it becomes more earthy and aromatic, before finally settling upon verdant woods. Although Kalan is not for everyone, it is brave and determined, standing out from its more modest peers.

Check the comments from this reviewer:

Opens up very spicy. Borderline intensely spicy. Few minutes after it settles down into this sweet, spicy, green and woody scent that is addictively good. Tried BR540 and also Spirito Fiorentino. I can agree with some that it has that similar-ish kinda DNA to it but I would pick Kalan 10 out of 10 times among the three.

Robust performance

Most Parfums de Marly colognes feature solid performance and that continues to be the case here.

Specifically, Kalan projects strongly from skin for the first 4 hours, before simmering closer for another 8. Therefore, expect no less than 12 hours of lasting power.

Kalan ranks right up there in potency alongside beasts like Carlisle. Accordingly, you’d be unwise to overspray this bad boy.

NOT an everyday scent

This unique, polarizing juice doesn’t work as an everyday scent. However, there’s a few situations where it does good work.

Kalan is a statement maker. Wear it selectively

Wear it to dinner parties and special events when you’re out to make a statement. Thus, it’s also a winner for cocktail bars and clubs when turning heads is your goal.

Also, Kalan is suitable for the cooler and moderate months. You should avoid it in Summer and wear Parfums de Marly Percival in the heat instead.

In Conclusion – Parfums de Marly Kalan

parfums de marly kalan

Kalan is memorable.

It courageously steers the Parfum de Marly range into uncharted territory, daring to dream with a focus on muscular spices and woody, earthy elements.

Although it won’t appeal to all, Kalan is an authentic elixir that shines brightest during special occasions. Spray with care and it’ll serve you well.
