Valentino Born in Roma Extradose – you don’t need it (explained)
How does Valentino Born in Roma Extradose smell?
Extradose contains 5 notes including vanilla, lavender, ginger, spicy notes, and woods.
The Opening:
On first spray I smell 3 main things.
Firstly, the bubblegum vanilla sweetness of the Born in Roma DNA is noticeable. However you can tell it’s been restrained and softened compared to past releases.
Then, there’s the trademark aromatic lavender edge. It’s been amped up in Extradose, giving a slightly more mature and herbal feel.
Also, there’s a prominent spicy component. It’s coming from ginger and gives off a fresh yet warm zinginess.
The Heart:
As the scent develops, the opening vanillic sweetness dials down. It’s replaced with more zesty spices, which give Extradose depth and attitude. Unlike Born in Roma Intense which leans way more into the sweeter side.
The Dry Down:
Extradose becomes more mellow when it fully dries on skin. The effervescent spices peel away, making space for woody notes to lead the scene.
Admittedly the woods are fairly generic and unremarkable. Nevertheless, they set a calming and warm tone that mixes with the remaining lavender. This combo carries the scent for several more hours.
Overall, Extradose is a mature, spicy version of the Born in Roma DNA. Whilst it maintains that iconic lavender, it lightens the sweetness from earlier releases. Also, it increases the spices which makes it smell dark and manly – without sacrificing freshness.
Nevertheless, I’m not convinced you need this if you own any of the others. It smells similar enough and isn’t some revolutionary creation that redefines the range.

Wishing I got my nose on this one before blind buying BiR intense! The similarity is definitely there but this is sweetness toned down, spicier and darker. Not unisex and youthful like the intense.
Extradose and Intense are very similar, but Extradose is less sweet in favor of more spices. It works, this is the pinnacle of the line so far. Still, it’s a tough buy considering the redundancy, but maybe I’ll get it anyways.
Versatility and Performance.
Extradose is pretty versatile. Since buying it a little while ago, there’s a few situations I’ve worn it and think it works well:
- Casual: This one slaps in any casual environment. Whether you’re catching up with friends, running errands or mulling about the house.
- Gym: I’ve worn it several times while working out. The dialled-down sweetness really works in Extradose’s favour here.
- Clubbing: I haven’t worn it here yet but this juice has night out written all over it. A more mature and spicier alternative to Versace Eros and Afnan 9pm.
Performance-wise, Extradose is the strongest Valentino release in a while. On my skin is projects out for a good 3 hours, creating an intoxicating scent bubble. Then, it settles closer for 7 hours after that – so that’s total lasting power of 10 hours.
It performs much better than the original Valentino Born in Roma. Each version has got progressively better in that respect.
Final Thoughts on Valentino Born in Roma Extradose
Valentino Born in Roma Extradose is undoubtedly an upgrade.
They’ve toned down the synthetic sweetness and elevated the rich lavender and spicy notes. The DNA is still familiar, though – only seasoned noses will catch the difference in the air.
If you’re buying your first Born in Roma fragrance? Extradose is the one to get.
But if you already own the others? You really don’t need it.
