Tom Ford Neroli Portofino: 3 Things to Know [Review]

Tom Ford Neroli Portofino is a men’s fragrance launched in 2011. Since release, it’s been labelled a sanguine citrus scent reminiscent of the Amalfi coast. Despite the glowing endorsement, there’s three pieces of information you must know before buying it. Hang around for the next few minutes and let me explain.

Neroli Portofino smells like crisp citruses and uplifting neroli

Neroli Portofino contains notes of bergamot, mandarin, lemon, neroli, lavender, rosemary, jasmine, and amber.

On first spray I’m greeted with a bright, zesty combination of citruses. Specifically, I smell an interplay of bergamot, mandarin, and lemon.

Heady lemon in the opening

The trio is balanced harmoniously with all contributing equally. However, distinct features of each are noticeable. For example, the mandarin exudes a tangy, orange facet. Whilst the lemon perpetuates a heady, mildly sharp nuance.

Next to emerge is the marquee ingredient – neroli. This orange blossom extract adds a bitter, green undertone to the opening trilogy. From here on, the neroli endures until the very end. Pleasingly, its inclusion reminds me of Dunhill Icon, another clean neroli cologne.

Orange blossom

As Neroli Portofino develops, three ingredients arrive and resonate subtly in the background:

  • Lavender – intervenes delicately amongst the citruses, adding a calming floral edge;
  • Jasmine – provides a lush, white floral, creamy element alongside the lavender; and
  • Rosemary – injects a soft herbal tinge amongst the serene florals.

Once the dry down phase commences, the opening citruses recede. The neroli endures, unceasingly intertwined with these three new background notes.

Soft herbal rosemary

However, they’re joined by an amber note emerging from the base.  It contributes a hint of warmth and sweetness, generating depth. It’s gentler, yet reminiscent of the amber in Tom Ford Beau de Jour.

Overall, Tom Ford Neroli Portofino is a well-executed, crisp neroli aroma. It opens with several fresh citruses, supported by a secondary neroli note. The tart neroli takes over as time goes on – progressively bolstered by a floral, herbal trio. Once the citruses withdraw, amber arrives. It extends a rounded backbone to the ingredients that remain.

This is so beautiful. I’m a sucker for a good neroli, and this is just gorgeous. Zingy, slightly bitter, uplifting, fresh, a dream. I can almost see myself in a quaint rural village in the Mediterranean (and I grew up in rural/suburban Med so I should know!) when I close my eyes and sniff it.

Performance is light

Neroli Portofino’s biggest criticism is its faint performance. My own testing has revealed similar results.

Specifically, it projects lightly from the skin for the first hour, before lasting on skin for 3 more. Therefore, expect 4 hours of total lasting power.

Do you crave all-day longevity? I recommend you reapply after that 4 hour mark.

A summer stunner

Unsurprisingly, Neroli Portofino is a summer stunner. Additionally, it strikes a harmonious balance between carefree and classy.

Therefore, it’s appropriate for all types of daytime casual situations. There’s few restrictions here fellas.

Spray it for office wear too, since the scent profile is entirely inoffensive.

Imagine this dreamy scenario – strolling the Mediterranean coastline on a sparkling summer day. That’s what I picture when wearing Neroli Portofino. Gorgeous.

In Conclusion – Tom Ford Neroli Portofino

Tom Ford Neroli Portofino is a clean citrus and neroli fragrance. Notwithstanding these vibrant characteristics, there’s classic Tom Ford complexity here too. The coalescing florals, herbs and amber deliver a pleasant deepness as the scent transforms.

If you’re after a quiet cologne to spritz in summer, this one’s an easy choice.
