ingenious ginger

Ingenious Ginger is my favourite release yet… (here’s why)

Ingenious Ginger is my favourite Goldfield & Banks release so far. I didn’t see that coming at all. Having ginger as the lead note, and the namesake, was a risky play – it can be bold, fiery, and not the easiest ingredient to tame. So in the beginning, I was doubtful. Yet here, it’s been transformed into something modern, bright, and ridiculously refreshing. After wearing it for a while now, I only regret one thing – that I didn’t pick it up sooner. Let’s take a closer look.

Some background…

Goldfield & Banks dropped Ingenious Ginger in 2023. Created by perfumer Hamid Merati-Kashani, it continues the Goldfield & Banks style of using Australian ingredients in every fragrance.

As an Aussie, I love that fact our native landscape is having its day in the spotlight.

This time they’ve led with Australian ginger flower, grown in parts of Eastern Australia. According to the brand, it’s their Founder’s favourite tropical flower.

How does Ingenious Ginger smell?

Ingenious ginger contains Australian ginger flower, lemon, bergamot, mandarin, white florals, vanilla, amber, sandalwood, and cashmeran.

Opening:

It bursts with a sparkling hit of Australian ginger that’s lively and realistic. Nothing harsh here, just a satisfying fizzy kick. That’s Aussie magic for you.

Also, lemon and bergamot infuse a citrus splash. They give it bright, fresh energy straight away. Easy enough to put me in an immediate good mood.

If you’re a fragrance nerd like me, you’ll smell similarities between this and Bvlgari Tygar. That’s because it has a comparable sparkling smooth citrus vibe. However, Tygar invests more in grapefruit and ambroxan.

Heart:

The middle stage feels like a more relaxed and mellow version of the opening.

Here the ginger softens, and mandarin adds a gentle, juicy glow. There’s sweetness, but it’s subtle – more a hint of orange peel than a sugary glass of Fanta.

White florals emerge gently – they bring more lift and lightness than strong floral punch.

Very subtle, sweet mandarin

Dry down:

Sandalwood and cashmeran become noticeable. They combine to smell slightly powdery and smooth, with the cashmeran adding a silky texture.

There’s also vanilla sweetness, but it’s used sparingly – a nice change to the synthetic blast us fragrance lovers have become used to.

After all this in the deep dry down, amber softly pulsates, contributing a touch of warmth.

In summary, Ingenious Ginger moves effortlessly from sparkling fresh to smooth and gentle, retaining that ginger vigour throughout.

It’s bright and balanced and so bloody enjoyable – the various textures throughout just ooze quality. In my view it’s a positive and polished potion that’s entirely unisex.

Here’s what other people think.

I searched Fragrantica and found these reviews:

Honestly, it’s one of those rare fragrances that just feels right the moment it hits your skin. My only regret is not falling in love with it sooner. This one’s definitely a new favorite. 10/10 well done Goldfield & Banks, truly an Australian masterpiece, pure class.

The opening is fresh, fizzy, and very refreshing. Then in the dry down it gets very smooth and the woods start to shine through. You can almost smell the ginger fizziness in between each note.

Rating performance and versatility.

Ingenious Ginger offers solid performance without being overpowering. It projects moderately for the first three hours before settling closer to the skin. Then, it continues to linger for another seven hours or so.

At the end of the day I still catch whiffs of that sparkling ginger heaven.

Additionally, I rank it high on versatility. It works for coffee dates, the gym, uni classes, or just hanging with friends. It’s even sprayable in casual office environments.

As for seasons? It’s a banger in in spring, summer, and autumn. But when winter rolls around, leave that to the heavier hitters – like Mancera Amore Caffe.

Let’s wrap it up.

To conclude, Ingenious Ginger shows that ginger doesn’t have to play second fiddle. Here, it’s the star – lifted even higher by the supporting notes around it.

Bright, balanced, and wearable, it’s that rare cologne that gives you positive vibes the moment it hits your skin.

For me, this is Goldfield & Banks at their best – distinctively Australian, uplifting, and crafted with some serious finesse.
