Guerlain L’Homme Ideal is a fragrance for men released in 2014. It’s the original scent of the L’Homme Ideal line, well-regarded for its distinctive use of almond. This version’s success saw the creation of several flankers that expanded upon the DNA of their predecessor. However, I still consider the original as one of the best. Read on for my full thoughts.
Guerlain L’Homme Ideal smells like aromatic citrus and sweet, deep woods
Guerlain L’Homme Ideal contains citruses, bitter orange, rosemary, tonka bean, almonds, leather, cedar, and vetiver.
The cologne opens with a fresh, lemon-like burst of citrus. However, it isn’t the only citrus facet present here. There’s some tanginess too, coming from the adjacent bitter orange accord.
A rosemary note appears alongside this duo. It smells herbaceous and spicy, introducing an aromatic dimension that provokes early masculine intrigue.
These notes linger on skin for about 20 minutes. Afterwards, the two heart notes appear amongst them:
- Tonka bean brings the first traces of sweetness. However, it never smells overbearing, balanced skillfully with the fresh, aromatic opening; and
- Almonds also introduce their own brand of rare sweetness. Although, they also diffuse some nutty, woody hues that deepen the aroma. Fans of this note may also enjoy Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait.
Finally, the dry down phase commences. Here, the scent begins its stride into darkness. The citruses slowly pull back, replaced with leather and cedar notes beckoning from below. These two together smell dry and powdery, boosting the density.
Lastly, there’s also a fragment of vetiver too. It smells elegant and supports the aromatic woody vibe going on.
In summary, Guerlain L’Homme Ideal smells like unique aromatic citruses, before becoming sweeter and deeper over time. The opening, heart, and dry down phases smell distinct with their own subtleties – starting brighter and ending darker. Yet regardless of stage, it always feels modern and inviting.
This reviewer had positive things to say:
So well blended. The citrus and rosemary at the opening, morphing into almond and tonka, with leather, vetiver and cedar in the drydown. It certainly is unique, no scent comes close to smelling like it (except for the L’HI flankers). More of a mature, sophisticated man’s scent.Fragrantica.com
Performance left me wanting
Guerlain L’Homme Ideal’s quiet performance left me hanging for more.
Specifically, I discovered that Guerlain L’Homme Ideal has 5 hours of total longevity. It projects softly from skin for the first 2 before mingling closer for the final 3.
Carolina Herrera Bad Boy is a cologne that gives me similar lasting power off skin.
It’s versatile. Enough said
Guerlain L’Homme Ideal features impressive range.
It can effortlessly be dressed up or down by men of various ages. Accordingly, spray it on for social situations, the office, or special events. L’Homme Ideal is a chameleon that expresses the energy of its wearer.
Nonetheless, its deep dry down can be a bit much during the hottest summer days. Although, you can feel confident applying during any other time of year. You’ll experience similar flexibility with its flankers, including Guerlain L’Homme Ideal EDP.
In Conclusion – Guerlain L’Homme Ideal
The multifaceted Guerlain L’Homme Ideal set the benchmark for all L’Homme Ideal releases that followed.
It features an atypical citrus profile with an unrivalled almond focus, before the aroma becomes richer and woodier over time.
Despite the mediocre performance, I’m not concerned. The versatility easily makes up for it, with only limited occasions I advise against wearing.
The OG walks its own path and still smells as awesome as ever.
